Indictments, Sentencings and Crack Rock: Just Another Day in the District

It wouldn’t be D.C. without a scandal in Congress, a White House official going to jail, and a headline with the words “Marion Barry” and “cocaine.”

Rep. William Jefferson (D-LA) was indicted yesterday on 16 counts after a 16-month corruption investigation. When I was on Capitol Hill this morning to publicize the Campus Progress National Student Conference, I strolled past Jefferson’s office in the Rayburn House Building. I’m not sure why I was expecting caution tape and a CSI team, but they were nowhere to be found. Just another day of googling and wikipedia for the interns.

Less than 24 hours later and just across the Potomac, Scooter Libby was sentenced to 30 months in prison for lying to a grand jury and obstructing the C.I.A. leak investigation. You’ll be hearing all about this one from the MSM so I’ll save my words for the next D.C. story which deserves play outside the Beltway.

I was halfway through a roasted cob of corn, my favorite streetfair fare, at dinner Sunday night when I heard that a woman had sped through a crowded street festival in Anacostia, hitting 40 people and smashing countless jars of shea butter and scented oils. The story would have likely received only the minimal coverage typically reserved for news from Southeast were it not for a twist uncovered by some investigative reporting. Turns out the driver was high on crack cocaine and worked for a man also known to be fond of the rock, former D.C. mayor and current councilman Marion Barry.

Progress Report?
By Zach Marks Jun 5th 2007 at 2:55 pm EDT
I got to know about the Center for America Progress from the Progress Report Link, a daily newsletter from the CAP Action Fund with talking points on the day's news. During the days of DeLay, Abramoff and Foley, the Republican scandals dominated the Progress Report. The Jefferson scandal was buried at the bottom of the "Under the Radar" section, and talked more about DeLay and Co. than the Democratic congressman indicted yesterday for orchestrating a complex bribery scheme. CAP is about promoting progressive politics; that shouldn't mean Republican-bashing and Democrat-cheering 100 percent of the time. A Dem screwed up pretty badly here. Let's not be afraid to call him on it.

Ah, the 80s...

...The "Yo Momma's on Crack Rock" video reminded me of something (unrelated) to share with you all:

Also, the Democratic caucus should have been way more out in front against Jefferson.

Congress' approval ratings are back down to where they were before the 2006 elections, and the Dems really have only themselves to blame.

I didn't even know there was a video for that song. It's really cute too. I'll always love old school music.

Shameful fact: It's not just Sweet Sensation - I'm a huge fan of 80s freestyle music in general.

omg me too! lol...ktu (a radio station in nyc) used to play old school freestyle alllll the time..now it's only sporadically but I get really excited and blast it when they put one on (I'm a dork).

My older cousin finds all these random little clubs that still play it like no time has passed although I've never been to one. I wouldn't really know how to dance to it but now I can watch the videos and learn lol.

I'm actually starting to find some of the hair/clothing styles pretty cute too while watching these which is scary (well not the mullets or moustaches but some of it) lol.

I think if there's a king of freestyle it's him:

Okay i'm not going to abuse Zach's blog anymore...somehow I don't think these are the comments he was expecting.
