Campus Progress recently reported that Florida A&M University was misleading students into thinking that they had no choice of lender for their federal loans. We found out yesterday that they must have gotten the message, because they have taken the problematic text off of their webpage.
Let’s hope that FAMU and all other universities that have not been upfront with students about their rights are revaluating their programs.
As noted in our article, Campus Progress has filed a public records request with the university in order to find out more about the “partnership” between these lenders and FAMU. There has been a great deal of controversy in recent months about the too-close-for-comfort relationships between lenders and financial aid offices, and how the lenders that schools recommend to students may not have been chosen with the student’s best interest in mind. We have created a guide to help you find out what is going on in your financial aid office, check it out.
The original text was:
“…Florida A&M University has chosen two lending partners who bring an extensive variety of products and services to our student and parent populations. These lenders, Regions Bank and Edamerica, are committed to working with you and/or your parents/guardians in making certain that all of your educational financial needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.
Please visit the following website for Regions Bank to begin your loan application process for students with the last name and parents with student’s with the last name beginning with A-K [sic].
Please visit the following website for Edamerica to begin your loan application process for students with the last name and parents with student’s with the last name beginning with L-Z [sic].”
