While our colleague Carl Malamud, filmmaker Ken Burns, and others are rightly taking on the Smithsonian for its secret deal to give the Showtime cable network exclusive access to national treasures, another branch of the Smithsonian is showing, um, its own brand of insensitivity. The National Zoo took some time to acknowledge the public's nickname for new panda Tai Shan -- Butterstick -- but now they have, and then some. On the back of the Zoo's latest Zoogoer magazine is an ad inviting us to their May 18 "Black & White Night ... an evening of sampling gourmet fare from Washington's finest restaurants ... an unforgettable night of food and fun." But most of the page is taken up by a photo of the adorable panda, looking a little bit frightened. Not surprising, given the large type tagline for this dining promotion: "Everything's Better With Butter." Hurry, get to the zoo, and see Tai Shan while you can!
