You're Stupid. The SAT says so.

The Chronicle blog links to a report (sub.) that says the average SAT score dropped by seven points last year. The College Board attributes the change to more minority and low-income students taking the test than the previous year. I guess it makes sense. The less selective the group is that takes the SAT, the lower the scores will be.

On the other hand, the testmakers definitely outline a very specific viewpoint -- one that may not be so appealing to low-income students who are starting to realize that to succeed in life, they need a college degree. So it makes me think: Is the way we test and teach too white?

"Too white"?

WTF?

We're late to the testing bandwagon, historically. They've were administering bureaucracy tests in China, far more draconian than anything involved in the SAT, going back to 605 AD.

I happen to know plenty of people of color who positively destroyed the SAT -- bent the test over and spanked it like a redheaded stepchild.

They are not "acting white" by doing so. You're doing them a colossal, bigoted disservice by your implicit claim that success in the current system is "white". Talk about being racially patronizing.

Another Culture Warrior BITES THE DUST

Larry Craig, ANOTHER lead "culture warrior", BITES THE DUST!!! All of those holier than thou right wingers that swear they are better and more righteous than the rest of us shouldn't forget these words...Judge lest ye shall be also judged! Of course we all laugh when we see them acting like they, for some reason beyond most of us, are somehow better than the rest of us. Which is why we all seem to laugh even louder when we see these nerdy little cultural misfits fall on their faces while trying to act superior.

But, deep down, most of us, being very human and caring and forgiving, and AMERICAN, even when we know that they aren't, we can't help but to feel sorry for our right-"clipped"-winged brothers. You know, if only they'd stop the non-sense politics of "vote for me because I'm morally superior to everyone else, and get down to some meaningful politics, maybe... just maybe, we can get back on the road to being the great nation that the creator wants and NEEDs us to be. And stand up again, TOGETHER, instead of separate, AS A NATION, and be real, legitimate, bona fide LEADERs in the world. These guy, as right as they are, are what's really WRONG with this country. Can't we all just get back to being GREAT AGAIN. You remember how we used to be, don't you?!? You know, honestly, if you take a good look around... there are a lot of other nations of smart people around the world that are watching the sadness that has become America, and wondering how we got to be so powerful, yet so stupid. The answer is... we used to be smarter, and that lead to our being powerful. Now we're not as smart. but we still have the power...For Now. In many other parts of the world, they look at us and think... maybe it's time they wrestle the power away from us and took control of the direction of this planet. No doubt, in our current state of stupidity we have lost our ability to lead ourselves and the repect of the rest of the world as far as our ability to lead them. All because we've decided that is more fun to stay at home and fight amongst each ourselves... You know...the big ole country western, yahoo, good ole boy, hold our own women back, erradicate the Red man, and hate the Yellow man, hold the Blacks back and run the Mexicans out, trailer trash, tabaco chewing, red neck, anti-Americans. Well, just Remember... the next time you stupidly and arrogantly look in the mirror shaking your head wondering... "what the hell happened to my great country?" Just remember..."A house divided can NOT stand!" These word are but a few wise words that came to us during a time when we were smart eough to hear them.

Uh... huh?

This sounds like it was intended as a [barely coherent, rambling] blog-post, not a reply to my comment.

(For starters, I'm not a right-winger.)

Too white??

Possible race bias of the SAT has been a subject of debate for 30 years. Since The Chronicle of Higer Learning mad you "think" about it, perhaps it was an independent realization on your part. However, you presnted no data to suppoert your "thought" and didn't seem to put any effort into investigating it. Perhaps that will appear in a forthcoming post. In the meantime, as an African American journalist with a law degree, I would like to know what you mean by "too white." My combined SAT scores were 1580. What were yours? If they were less than 1580, does that make me "whiter" than you are? Having a voice and an audience (small as it seems to be) requires responsibility. While I applaud the fact that you take a position on racial inequality, it would be much more valuable if your "insights" were backed up with facts and if your tone weren't so patronizing.

wow, Kay. In other words, a bunch of random internet readers with poor analogies (redheaded stepchild? really?) and bad spelling think you suck. and you're racist.

happy wednesday.

Several thoughts:

1. "Spanked it like a redheaded stepchild" is an *awesome* simile (which is different than an analogy? Link ). If you've never heard that one before, your life is all the poorer.

2. I'm not a 'random' internet reader, in the sense that I've both blogged and commented on this blog-site longer than Kay has. If I were thus 'random', she would be... even more random?

3. Upon further reflection, I've got poor grammar ("they've were"), not poor spelling.

And most importantly...

4. Most progressives understand that a person can be racist without explicit intending to be. If Kay would like to explain how her comments *weren't* racist, she's more than welcome to start trying.

5. Kay's equating success in the current system to whiteness gets even sillier the more you think about it. By this odd logic, Jewish- and Asian-Americans are whiter than Caucasians?
