I'll leave the dissection of the arguments in Bill Kristol's column today to those more qualified to discuss the myriad failings and instabilities of the war in Iraq.
I will, however, comment on the correction posted to his column last week--turns out that quote he attributed to Michelle Malkin really belonged to Michael Medved. What a relief! The thinking world was up in arms that Kristol would quote so reviled a source of mindless conservative rhetoric in his examination of Republican presidential nominees—turns out he was quoting a guy who thinks “Happy Feet” was part of the evil gay agenda that’s invading America. A big step up, I’d say.
Wow. Just when you thought the biggest right-wing pundits couldn't get any more racially insensitive, Michael Medved decides to write a column about slavery. Don't read it if you've eaten in the past hour or so.
Right-wing radio hosts keep on getting invited to private meetings with the president. After having Hannity & Co. over last year, he brought his old friends back yesterday. These guys are pretty ubiquitous as it is with corporate-owned, conservative mouthpiece radio stations dominating the airwaves, but Bush can’t seem to get enough of ‘em so he keeps bringing them down to the Oval Office for off-the-record tea parties.
Since the Know Your Right Wing Speakers bio on Michael Medved just went up, I thought I’d hop over to Medved’s site to see what the latest from the Mustachioed Madman was. A fresh blog post from Medved was there to greet me and it did not disappoint. He begins:
The latest example of political correctness run amok involves the BBC describing the Islamists who planned bombings in London and Glasgow as arising from “the disfranchised South Asian community.”
Medved goes on to claim the terms “South Asian” and “Indian” are “misleading.” He denounces “[t]he refusal to use the words “Muslim” or “Islamist” to identify these terrorists,” and continues: “But of course, they’re all Muslim.”
This isn’t all that shocking coming from Medved, who calls Islam “a primitive religion” and insists there is “a violence problem in the Muslim world because that is an inherent problem in Islam.” What is shocking is that President Bush invited this guy to the White House talk to him about Middle East affairs. Glad the president’s talking to the experts.
The latest from Medved is by no means as ridiculous as Michael Savage’s comments which Cara dutifully reported yesterday, but it just reinforces the need for progressives to reclaim the airwaves from rabid right-wingers.
I’ve spent time this week fact-checking an article about Michael Medved and thought that I’d heard it all. Yet today I was alerted by a Faith in Public Life blog about some comments recently made by Michael Savage when discussing the attempted terror attacks in Britain. "[W]hen I see a woman walking around with a burqa, I see a Nazi,” he said.
