Over at the Washington Monthly blog, I see that this month's issue is all about torture. And why torture is bad.   Read More »

According to PBS' Jim Lehrer and White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten, W is still the Decider, whereas Petraeus is more like a "magic judger." Seriously. I couldn't make this stuff up:

JIM LEHRER: Mr. Bolten, how did we get into a situation where one general named Petraeus has suddenly become the master whatever, the master decider as to what is happening on the ground in Iraq?

JOSHUA BOLTEN: Well, he's not the decider.

JIM LEHRER: OK. Bad choice of words.

JOSHUA BOLTEN: He's the commander on the ground.

JIM LEHRER: I withdraw the word.

JOSHUA BOLTEN: Withdrawal permitted.

JIM LEHRER: OK, magic judger, all right?

Hell has officially frozen over—Karl Rove is leaving the White House at the end of August.

“I just think it’s time,” Rove said. Time to cut the puppet strings, pack up his dirty campaign tactics and teach Bush to parrot someone else’s lines. Time for Rove to, um, spend more time with his family. Which has nothing to do with bailing out of an increasingly impotent and unpopular administration.

Post-White House, Rove plans to write a book about Bush’s presidency, which should be easy since Karl “Bush’s Brain” Rove planned and executed everything in the Oval Office since 2001. He also wants to teach, ensuring that his legacy of manipulating impressionable minds will continue.

Rove says he’s pulling out completely—no politics, no political consulting, no candidate endorsements. So let’s remember Rove at his best—not just as a ridiculously powerful and underhanded political advisor, but also as a killer MC:

Right-wing radio hosts keep on getting invited to private meetings with the president. After having Hannity & Co. over last year, he brought his old friends back yesterday. These guys are pretty ubiquitous as it is with corporate-owned, conservative mouthpiece radio stations dominating the airwaves, but Bush can’t seem to get enough of ‘em so he keeps bringing them down to the Oval Office for off-the-record tea parties.
