Another Vote for Gore

I have to agree with Kay on the entirety of her post. Without Gore, climate change is still a fringe movement instead of being up there with the economy, war on terror, Iraq, and health care as the most pressing issues on voters' minds. And he has done all this without the bully pulpit and policy tools that world leaders have.

I think General Petraeus is an interesting pick as well, though perhaps for next year. He has turned around the debate in Iraq from when are we going to withdraw to how large of a force can we reasonably maintain there. As Tom Ricks said at a recent Campus Progress event, he is the first general in charge of the Iraq war that has actually understood the nature of the conflict and created real military progress (though no political progress). Petraeus has certainly had an enormous (mostly positive) impact on arguably the greatest foreign policy blunder in U.S. history. So much so, that Iraq is no longer driving the national political debate.

Al Gore

Much as I love Rob, I think he's wrong about Time's Person of the Year. Vladimir Putin, while an influential figure in the realm of foreign policy is no Al Gore, recipient of a Nobel peace prize and helped steer the environmental movement from the fringe to the forefront. The thing about Gore’s influence is, well, it’s all influence. Gore doesn’t hold a position of power like the Condoleezza Rice or Hu Jintao. His job is purely philanthropic. Although I’d really like the person of the year to be someone other than a white man, I have to say that it’s Gore’s year. And let’s face it. Anything is better than last year’s “you.”

Best Picture Ever of Al Gore

As you all know by now, Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize. More importantly, he earned this AWESOME picture in the New York Times:

Al Gore Speaks

Al Gore is now speaking at the UN. His speech sounds a lot like his movie/powerpoint in the beginning when he talks of disappearing lakes and species. Later he gets more perscriptive. Some highlights:

He advocates linking poverty reduction and carbon emission reduction.

Spending less time on covering OJ Simpson and Paris Hilton (to applause).

Get emissions under control by 2010, two years earlier than currently proposed.

Call an emergency session in early '08 to follow up the Bali summit.

Tipper Gore Exposed

For decades, Tipper Gore has told parents how to raise their children. In her book Raising PG Kids in an X-Rated Society, she shamed parents who dare allow their children access to youth culture. She insisted that following her example of selecting your children’s music and TV programs for them, of chaperoning your teenaged children at concerts, etc. was the only way to ensure children would grow up right and become adults who make the right choices.

We recently saw the results of Tipper Gore-style parenting. The son Tipper Gore raised, Al Gore III, was caught endangering people’s lives by driving 100 mph on a public highway. When police pulled him over, they found in his car several illegal drugs. This was not Al Gore III’s first such experience, of course. In 2003, he was stopped for driving at night with his headlights off and police found drugs then, too. Not only has Tipper Gore raised a junkie who endangers other people’s lives, but she has raised a son who can’t even figure out that when you have a stash in your car, you don’t drive 100 mph.

Now that we’ve seen the results of Tipper Gore parenting, hopefully parents will stop emulating her example. Because Al Gore III is not the only victim.

Bloomberg: The Answer To Our Prayers, Or The Next Ralph Nader?

With only six months before the first Caucus in Iowa, the race for the Democratic and Republican nomination is in full swing, but there could be one more name added to the list of potential candidates, a third party candidate. Could a third party Independent candidate really sweep in and bring an end to the two-party domination of politics as we know it?

Me, a one issue voter?

Yesterday, after attending a couple of hearings on the hill regarding genocide and mass atrocities in Africa, I happened upon a Climate Crisis Action Day rally in front of the Capitol building to support the permanent protection of areas like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by taking action to stop the effects of global warming. A variety of representatives from both the House and Senate gave compelling speeches to support initiatives that would end the climate crisis we currently find ourselves in. As I was leaving the area of the rally there was an older gentleman selling shirts, bumper stickers, and buttons with slogans like “America Needs Al Gore 2008”. I, after pulling out the entire contents of my briefcase in my search for a dollar, bought one of his buttons, hoping that my dollar would be the one that would push Mr. Gore over the edge, forcing him to throw his hat into the next presidential race.
