Alternative Spring Break: Combating Climate Change 2008
Want to do more with your spring break this year?
Campus Progress is working with students and several partner organizations to organize the first Global Warming Alternative Spring Break at the University of California – Santa Barbara this March 24-27.
The alternative spring break will include trainings, workshops, and speakers from all aspects of the climate movement, including environmental justice, sustainability, and environmental policy. Located right on the beach, the alternative spring break will better educate, train, and empower students to take action on the climate crisis in their own lives, on their campuses, and on a national scale.
And of course, this is spring break, so students will have time to soak up the sun and relax on the beach, explore the biologically rich California coastline, and meet other students committed to solving the climate crisis.

Getting There By Air
If you are flying into Santa Barbara Airport (SAB), there is a Public Bus Stopon Moffett Road across from the Airline Terminal. Bus Schedules are available in the Terminal south lobby and online at http://www.sbmtd.gov/. The #11 bus will take you to and from the airport, downtown Santa Barbara, UCSB, and the Quality Inn. Click here for Stops and Schedule for the #11. You can find out more about transportation options from the airport here. By Train There are two Amtrak stations in the area – one in Goleta, which is a little closer to campus, and one in Santa Barbara. The Pacific Surfliner serves both stations, as well as Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Louis Obispo. The Coast Starlight serves the Santa Barbara station, as well as Seattle, Eugene, Oakland, and Los Angeles. You can book your train ticket here. Carbon Offsets We will be purchasing carbon offsets from TerraPass for your travel after the event. Staying There Hotel We are helping many of the attendees stay at the Quality Inn, which is conveniently located on the #11 bus route (which goes to UCSB, the airport, and downtown). You will be assigned a roommate. All students that we are helping to stay at the Quality Inn should plan to give Campus Progress $30 during registration (checks are preferred) to help cover part of the costs of their stay. The check should be made out to the Center for American Progress, and you should write “Campus Progress” in the memo line. You can also click here to donate online, but you must email me your confirmation for it to count towards your housing fee. The Kindness of Strangers We will be in touch with UCSB students and student housing co-ops to secure some free places for participants to stay. Most of these locations are close to campus, and walking is an option, but you will be in charge of all of your transportation. You can find bus routes and schedules by clicking here. You should bring a towel, shampoo, and soap. Unless you have heard otherwise, you should also bring a pillow and/or sleeping bag.
