UNC Greensboro Junior Zim Ugochukwu Selected to Lead Workshop at Campus Progress’ Southern Regional Conference this Weekend
Conference at Morehouse College in Atlanta Will Host Over 200 of the South’s Best and Brightest Student Activists and Journalists

Atlanta, Georgia – This weekend, Zim Ugochukwu, a student at UNC Greensboro, will lead a training workshop at Campus Progress’ first-ever Southern Regional Conference at Morehouse College, in Atlanta, Georgia. The conference, held from February 6 – 8, will host 200 of the South’s best and brightest young people who will be participating in one of two conference tracks: Activism or Journalism. Throughout the three-day event, students will learn from engaging speakers, participate in networking, training, and skills-building workshops, attend a plenary session focused on anti-oppression organizing in the South in the wake of the election of Barack Obama, and take part in an environmentally-focused community service project.

Ugochukwu’s workshop for the Activism Track, How To Remain PROGRESS-ive in the CONSERVE-ative South, will provide students with insight into what it takes to stay motivated and inspired to work for progressive change in a climate that is historically conservative.

“By presenting this workshop, I hope to share the view of the world that I hope we can create rather than focus on the world as it is,” said Ugochukwu. “I wanted to come up with a fun and innovative approach to tackling the age-old problem of persistence and motivation. In the world which we live, there are a lot of things that still need some major work, and no one else is left to shoulder that burden but [young people]. We are the ones who will walk the halls of institutions, hospitals, schools, streets and neighborhoods in search of greater good and inclusive justice.”

Ugochukwu, a Campus Progress Student Representative and Media Spokesperson, currently works on helloCHANGE, the first-ever national project that promotes youth activism centered on tobacco use prevention. This past fall, Ugochukwu interned on the Obama Campaign, and she is also dedicated to mobilizing youth in the Greensboro area through her “Ignite Greensboro [got two?]" issue campaign for the International Civil Rights Museum. Hailing from Durham, NC, and Rochester, MN, Ugochukwu is a junior at UNC Greensboro majoring in biology with a double minor in political science and communications.
